NeoClassical Chili by McGrath Associates, 1988
The
unexamined life is not worth living.
- Socrates
This painting in the instructor's office is based on the 1787 Neoclassical painting by
Jaques Louis David, The
Death of Socrates. The referenced real painting is in the
Metropolitan Museum, NY. NeoClassical Chili is the most prominent thing in
my office:
4 panels - each 4' x 6', acrylic on board. Its original purpose was
to be
the centerpiece and theme for the 1988 McGrath's booth at the annual Graphic Designer's
Chili Cook-off in Dallas. In this rendition, Socrates is given a bowl of
"Hot" designer's chili
featuring a hot red pepper. The painting is in black and white, with color only on
the
Mexican hat, bowl of chili and the neon orange letters spelling out NEOCLASSICAL
CHILI.
Socrates, c. 470-399 BCE, was a Greek philosopher sentenced
to death by drinking
poison hemlock. He was accused of corrupting the youth of Athens through his
teachings. One
of his most famous quotes is: The unexamined life is not worth living.

Webster's Dictionary Definition of the Socratic method
- a method of teaching or discussion, like that used by Socrates,
in which by means of a series of questions and answers the logical soundness
of a definition is tested, the meaning of a concept examined, etc.

One of your instructor's main areas of concentration in college was early modern art.
Sonia and Robert Delaunay
in front of his painting,
Propeller, 1923. This is a photo of a famous art
couple living in France. It was taken during the modern
abstract art movement called Orphism. Sonia and
Robert first called this style Simultaneity. Their movement
brought color to Cubism and Robert later became one
of the first artists to abandon subject matter referring
to the real world. He painted a kaleidoscope of geometric
shapes in brilliant color. Sonia designed clothing in the
same colors and shapes, which she wore like an abstract
painting while watching Robert dance the Tango and Foxtrot
at dance halls like the Bal Bullier; a place where artists
and poets such as their friend, Apollinaire, also gathered.
